Sugar Free January 2009

Hello 2009!

I don't know about you, my dear friends, but 2009 really snuck up on me. It's nearly the middle of January and I haven't posted a single recipe this year.

That will be resolved very soon.

For the past several years my husband and I have had a fast during the month of January. We slowly let go of sugar for the whole month and tried to eat as healthily as possible. To see our plan from last year, click here.

This year will be a bit different. This Ginger Lemon Girl seriously needs to get healthy. So we're cutting WAY back on sugar. I'm going to do some serious investigating of other natural sweeteners, I'm going to tweak recipes, we're going to incorporate healthy low-carb recipes into our daily lifestyle, I'm going to eat vegetables (seriously... real ones!), and I'm going to dig out the Richard Simmons videos. Stop laughing, I love Richard Simmons!

And this isn't going to end in January. You're stuck with a healthier Ginger Lemon Girl...

At least until next Thanksgiving.

  1. It's good to see you back! I haven't posted a single thing either. I think having the holidays in the middle of the week this year threw things off a bit. I love Richard Simmons too! He was on the Today Show this week. Too funny! Happy New Year Carrie :)

  2. I hear you, Carrie. I do so much better on considerably less sugar. I look forward to reading about your research with the natural sweeteners. And, of course I am anxious for the new recipes. :-)

    Your old standby is Richard Simmons ... mine is Leslie Sanson and her "Walk Away the Pounds" videos. They really work!

  3. I replace sugar with maple syrup in most of my baking -- I don't make lots of cookies but muffins, pies, breads, etc... Sometimes I reduce it a little because of the extra liquid but really not by much. B Grade syrup tastes better to us. Thanks for your great blueberry muffin recipe by the way -- I used a little less than 1/2 cup of maple and they were some of the best gluten free muffins I've ever made.

  4. Less sugar, thats hard with my sweet tooth, but I absolutely looooove vegetables. I could live off of them, yum! Richard Simmons sounds like the perfect way to get fit, as long as it keeps you motivated, I say go for it! This'll be my year to get fit again too, so just remember that you're never alone! =D

  5. My favorite natural sweetener is Nu Naturals NuStevia. It is a stevia that is not bitter! If you add too much it just gets too sweet. They do have a No Carb Stevia blend but this adds erythritol and I have one child who is sensitive to this. They also have a More Fiber Baking Blend that I use in our GF recipes in place of sugar. It has maltodextrin in it, but this is from a safe source. There is information on their site about their maltodextrin mot being a form of MSG or source of MSG.

I do better with less sugar and carbohydrates as well (which stinks for somebody who loves to bake as much as I do!) I love Leslie Sansone too! I will probably rotate her 1 mile tapes with Richard! lol ;-)

    OOna - I like grade b maple syrup as well! Unfortunately it's still very much a sugar that doesn't treat my body well, so I can't use it much!! Thanks for commenting!

    Lauren -- Less sugar is hard for me too! I just really need to jump back on the wagon and make a serious commitment to WAY less sugar and carbs! Last two days have gone well! ;-P I'm glad you are in this with me!!

    Hinterlands - I really like Stevia too! I've been using a product called Truvia which is very similar to the Nu Naturals brand I believe. It's also a non-bitter formula of stevia! I'm all for real, all natural sweeteners. I am a fan of erythritol (thankfully I don't have a reaction to that!), so I plan to use that in more baking along with NuStevia!

  7. I highly recommend Xylitol, a natural sweetener that also is good for your teeth and reduces cavities.

  11. Oh my gosh, I LOVE Richard Simmons. He has done some amazing things for SO MANY people.

    We should swap recipes some time. Also, I have a whole bunch of favorite natural sweeteners that I use on a regular basis because I have been sugar-free since Jan. 1, 2008! Congrats on making that your goal!

    My favorite sweeteners are: raw honey, agave nectar, brown rice syrup (get an organic, high quality product or it might be just like corn syrup), dried fruit, date sugar (my favorite), and applesauce.
