October: Unprocessed - A Gluten Free Food Challenge!

"Unprocessed food is any food that could be made by a person with reasonable skill in a home kitchen with readily available, whole-food ingredients." -- October Unprocessed website.

How often do you eat whole, real foods? Foods that don't come in a box, bag, can, or plastic wrapper?

If you read this blog, my guess is that you eat unprocessed whole foods on a somewhat regular basis. I like to cook after all.

I'm joining in with my blog friend Heidi, author of Adventures of a Gluten Free Mom  and FB friend Diane Bramos to challenge people to have at least one unprocessed meal a day.

I realize eating NO processed foods for an entire month could be slightly unrealistic. I'm not always great about making sure we have a homemade gluten free meal for dinner. I work full time, as does my husband. We have busy schedules... so this challenge is for me as well.

I'll be blogging about this process and the meals we make for the next 30 days.

I challenge you to join us.

One homemade meal a day with real ingredients for 30 days. Are you in?

If you would like to join in with a guest post or a recipe to me try, please leave me a comment and let me know or send me an email

Here are a few recipes... or "food for thought" ideas in joining this challenge:

Black Bean and Butternut Squash Chili

Homemade gluten free chicken noodle soup with homemade gluten free noodles

Homemade slow cooked bolognese sauce for pasta -- recipe coming soon!

Homemade fruit smoothies: bananas, strawberries, blueberries, stevia, and water. Blend and enjoy!

Lower glycemic homemade chicken pot pie.

  1. Wonderful idea! I am totally participating.

  2. Love this Carrie! This is just how we eat now. It took a long time and we just don't eat processed foods any more. I think you will find after your October challenge, that it takes a little more planning on the front end, but you can easily double, things to freeze for another meal. I have a ton of ideas running around in my brain to share, lol, but this is an insanely busy time. ahh the story of my life. Maybe I can send you an email and share some of the tips I have learned (can you say trial and error. =0) I am loving to see some of your tips, recipes, etc. Great idea for a challenge cause even though I have been doing it now for awhile, it is always good to get more ideas/tips. Thanks for jump starting this! ps love me some Heidi!
We live just a few minutes away from each other. Talk about small world!

  3. I love this idea! You are so correct - so much of what we eat comes out of a package. I try to do a bit better than the average, but maybe I need to put more thought into this and make a plan. Keep posting your ideas and I'll keep trying them! Thanks so much for your efforts!

  4. Thrilled that you're joining in the challenge!

If your readers want to join in -- and I hope the will -- I'd really appreciate if they'd also sign the pledge on my website. I'm trying to keep an accurate count of everyone involved. Thanks! :)

  5. I am in Carrie - this is how we eat anyway so it will be easy for us. The only processed foods we eat are gf pretzels, crackers and organic hot dogs for the kiddies! I'll head over to eating rules and get signed up there too. Great idea!

  6. you're an inspiration in every way carrie!
we do eat mainly unprocessed, but bread and pasta we do buy. thanks to your gorgeous recipes, i'm about to add those to my made-at-home list too. thanks for this challenge, count me in!

  7. I am in, Carrie! This is how I eat most of the time anyway! I haven't eaten a processed thing all day, in fact. :) It takes more planning, for sure, but if you cook extra on purpose when you do cook, you can do things with the leftovers (or just eat them) so you're not cooking all the time, and you can have good food when you're on the run.

  8. Real whole foods is the way to go! :D I really need to read blogs AFTER I eat. All your pictures just made me hungry. lol Then again, I've been packing all day. Hard work!

  9. Well I've always loved to cook but now after going GF, I make nearly everything I eat. Mostly because I have not found many GF products that I think taste very good.

  10. Hi! We are adding your challenge to our Weekend Wrapup post tomorrow. I think it's a great idea!
    Take care!
